Windshield Pitting
What is windshield pitting? Another important question is why you should care about it in case you do get it. Windshield pitting is when your windshield begins to have mini craters which causes a glare. Pitting may come from sand, dirt, stones, or any sort of debris in the way of your vehicle. They look like stars on a windshield, but they may have a further effect on you than you know. An example is shown below of what a windshield that has pitting looks like.
As you can see, it can be seen as a star gazing base but there are important things to notice. These small dots you see are mini craters that have happened over the years, and they CANNOT be removed. The repeated action of stones, rocks, dirt, or sand being thrown unintentionally on your windshield is what causes this. For instance, if there is a small stone that has hit your car but hasn’t chipped it, it would create a small crater that would be hard to notice from the human eye. However, over time if more small objects have hit this same spot, it will create a windshield pit. Having one or two on your windshield may be okay for you to drive but having a car for many many years (at least 5-10 years) may result in more windshield pitting. You can see in the picture below how a windshield with many pitting looks like.
A windshield with many small craters would need to be replaced as there is no device to fix windshield pitting. Now how urgent is this matter? It depends. If there are a few spots outside the driver vision, windshield replacement may not be urgent. When the sunlight hits a place with many craters, it causes a serious flare. A kind of flare that may make it hard to see, but this isn’t the biggest issue. There may be a bigger issue with how it affects your eyes. Your eyes will look through a glare and doing that puts the eye at risk because of its unusual pattern to accept the light. A picture below shows how a car with rain and sunshine would look with windshield pitting.
Driving with this kind of windshield can be frustrating and difficult and autoglass experts may provide temporary solutions but it’s always preferable for the sake of the car and your eyes for the windshield to be fully replaced.
